The Crocodile: A Story
I swam through the shallow water, my webbed feet digging into the mud and pushing effortlessly. The silt and muck that I kicked up didn't bother me, my eyes seeing straight through the murkiness.
The scent of fish filled my nostrils. I could sense the fish long before I saw them. The motion of them swimming traveling up my sensitive snout. I stopped and waited, my mouth wide, anticipating the slightest touch of fish flesh.
A light tap on my tongue, and my jaws snapped down. A thing squirmed against my locked teeth, tearing itself into shreds. I lifted my head up and snapped the fish down.
I opened my mouth again and waited for another victim. I felt tremors in the water. It was coming from the bank. I instinctively turned to see what was happening.
Two humans were fighting, one was large and wore heavy clothing. The other was small and covered in strange clothing, resembling large leaves. They swung shiny sticks, banging them together.

Paul Markus sat in his office, on the 102nd floor of the North tower of The World Trade Center on September 11, 2001. He had come early to get some extra work done that he had put off for a few days. Computer animated goldfish swam on his computer screen aimlessly. For a minute, he marveled at how real they looked. He had finished the work about an hour before, and had slept for half an hour.
Slowly, more people were coming off the elevator. Paul glanced towards the window and stared at the large span of buildings that lead out to the sparkling waters of the East River. The morning sky was beautiful and clear. Paul felt happy and content. He leaned back in his chair and closed his eyes.
